VIII Baku International Conference of Ombudsmen
VII Baku International Conference of Ombudsmen on “Human rights and environment: legal and ethical aspects of climatic change” devoted to June 18 – “ National Day of Human Rights” and “Year of Ecology” was held on 17-19 June, 2010 with support of UNESCO jointly with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and Ministry of Emergencies.
Ombudsmen of Thailand, Slovenia, Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova or representatives of National Human Rights Institutions, international experts of these countries attended the conference.
Azerbaijani Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova delivered a speech at the plenary session of the meeting about Ombudsman’s activity in the field of protection of environmental rights reflected in the international and legal national legal acts. She noted that the topic “legal and ethical aspects of the climate change”, which is a significant issue, has been held for the first time by Azerbaijani Ombudsman Office.
The representative of UNESCO Moscow Office, Alla Ampar briefed about mutual relations of her organization with the Azerbaijani Ombudsman and underlined that the ecological issues are also priority for UNESCO as well.
Other participants of the meeting also delivered speeches at plenary sessions. Later guests visited the Parliament and met with the First-deputy of the Chairman of the Parliament, Ziyafat Asgarov.
At the end of the international event, Baku Declaration which reflected the multiple recommendations made by the Commissioner was adopted.
