The Ombudsman met with the OHCHR�s senior human rights advisor for South Caucasus office

The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva met with Vladimir Shkolnikov, Senior Human Rights Advisor for the Southern Caucasus Regional Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The Commissioner Sabina Aliyeva informed that during the term of activity of the Ombudsman institution, close ties were established with the UN, and joint projects were implemented. She spoke about the importance of continuing effective cooperation with different Specialized Agencies of the UN, including the OHCHR. It was also emphasized that within the framework of joint educational projects in the capital and regions of the country, journalists, lawyers, law students and non-governmental organizations are actively involved in trainings held on UN human rights mechanisms, Azerbaijan-UN cooperation, raising awareness of local NGOs on reporting to the UN Treaty Bodies, the status of implementation of rights and freedoms enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to the national legislation, promotion of Sustainable Development Goals and other such topics. At the same time, a free joint legal assistance campaign was organized for vulnerable groups at the Ombudsman’s Regional Centers. Currently, an educational training program is  being implemented   with the OHCHR Mission in Azerbaijan.

V. Shkolnikov noted that the organization represented by him attaches great importance to the cooperation with the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan and he has great curiosity in further development of effective cooperation in the field of protection of human rights and freedoms.

Priority areas of cooperation between the Ombudsman's Office and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights were also discussed in the meeting.
