The Office of the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan hosted V Baku International Conference of Ombudsmen under the theme “Increasing Capacity of the Ombudspersons in Promotion and Protection of Human Rights” jointly with the UNESCO on 18-19 June, 2007.
This international event, organized on the occasion upon State Program on Human Rights Promotion adopted on 18 June, 1998 by national leader of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev was dedicated to the 5th anniversary of the acceding to the European Convention on Human Rights Protection as well as the establishment of Azerbaijani Ombudsman Office.
The conference was attended by the Director of the UNESCO Moscow Office, Dendev Badarch, Deputy Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), Mr. Mark Gatri, Vice-president of the IOI and Federal Ombudsman of Austria, Mr. Peter Kostelka, Head of the CoE Baku office, Mr. Denis Bribosia, Ombudsmen of Georgia, Moldova, RF Saratov, Sverdlovsk, Kemerovo and the Republic of Dagestan and representatives of the Ombudsman offices of RF Moscow city, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan as well as Chairman of the permanent Commission of the Belarus Parliament.
At the conference the Azerbaijani Commissioner made a speech about the establishment and development of the Azerbaijani Ombudsman. Ombudsman took the occasion of this important event to to inform the participants about human rights reforms taken at country level, ratification of over 200 international treaties by Azerbaijan, and state policy to support the development of human rights protection at the national level.
Other participants shared also their practical experience and expertise in separate sessions and side-events of the conference.
At the end of the meeting, all participants signed a Joint Memorandum of V Baku International Conference.
