Head of the Ombudsman’s NPG participated in EU Seminar in Tbilisi

These days the Head of the Ombudsman’s National Preventive Group, Mr. Rashid Rumzada participated in “EU-TAIEX Workshop on Combating Violaence against Women and Empowering Equality Bodies” in the frame of Tecnical Assistance and Information Exchange Office (TAIEX) instrument held in Tbilisi, Georgia. Furthermore, Azerbaijan was represented by the Ministry of Justice, State Committee on Family, Women and Child Issues as well.

The object of the Seminar was to discuss the existed problems in the Eastern Partnership Countries and formation of the new mandate with regard to the succesfull approaches to ratification of the CoE Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence aganst Women and Domestic Violence and development of the activities. 

The Spanish, Belgian, Romanian, Czeck, Croatian and Georgian practical experience of ensuring of women’s rights, domestic violence and preventive measures against violence against women, relevant international standards, developments in national legislation, accountability issues have been discussed during the workshop.  

In the presentation of his speech, Mr. Rumzada told about the Azerbaijani Commissioner’s for Human Rights activity in the field of women’s rights, prevention of domestic violence and abuse, reforms taken at the national level, developments in the national legislative database and active participation of the Ombudsman in these processes, gender approaches, gender and human rights education initiatives, 24-hour hotlines, applications’ procedure, awareness activities, implementation of Twinning, TAIEX, Eastern Partnership Projects.  The Participants were dispensed written statements on prevention of violence against women issued by the Commissioner.

This should be noted that the Azerbaijani Ombudsman was the first person in the South Caucasus Region who recommended to the Parliament to ratify the Istanbul Convention showing that in her annual report. Among the recommendations made by the Commissioner there are also those that related to combating violence against women and domestic violence, effective ensuring women’s rights, and legislative reforms.
