The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan Ms. Sabina Aliyeva delivered a speech before the students at the University of Ankara. The Chief Ombudsman of Turkey, Rector of the University, and Dean of the Law Faculty also took part in the meeting.
The Ombudsman thanked for the invitation and said that during her visit, she participated in the Association of the Turkic States and National Human Rights Institutions foundation ceremony, as well as the presentation of the Report on human rights violations directed against Azerbaijan. Ms. Aliyeva expressed her confidence that with the support of this Association, which was newly established in Bursa, the cooperation among the ombuds institutions of Turkic States would strengthen their cooperation. During her speech, it was underlined that last year, the delegation of the OIC Ombudsmen Association inspected the civilian settlements, historical and cultural properties affected by the occupation and conflict, as well as the mined areas in Azerbaijan. At the conclusion of her speech, she added that the Report on the violation of human rights of international law was prepared.
Later, the Ombudsman informed the students about the activities to improve the legislation to protect human rights and freedoms in sovereign Azerbaijan, and the Ombudsman Institution, which was established as a continuation of these reforms and has been operating as a non-judicial mechanism for the 20 years. The participants were also briefed about the national preventive mechanism mandate of the Ombudsman, her activities to ensure the protection of various population groups, as well as international cooperation.
