Ganja Regional Center held a regional legal awareness videoconference

In the frame of the May 18 and June 18 Human Rights Month-Long Campaign, announced by the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman in coordination with Samukh city Heydar Aliyev Center organized a regional legal awareness videoconference entitled “Ensuring human rights is the highest goal of the State of Azerbaijan” for all Heydar Aliyev Centers located in the western region. Heads of centers from Samukh, Ganja, Shamkir, Goygol, Goranboy, Naftalan, Dashkasan, Gadabay, Gazakh, Agstafa, Tovuz, Ujar, Agjabedi, Terter, Agdam, Saatli and Gobustan joined this videoconference.

In his speech, the head of the Regional Center, Sabuhi Abbasov delivered warmest greetings of the Commissioner to the participants and informed them about history of establishment of the Human Rights Day in Azerbaijan and the Human Rights Month-long Campaign initiated by the Ombudsman. The goal of this month-long campaign was to assess the accomplishments, future perspectives and preventive measures for eliminating impediments. 

It was noted that each year, 18 June is celebrated as the Human Rights Day in the country according to the relevant Presidential Order of 18 June, 2007. In this regard, on the initiative of the Ombudsman, the period between 18 May and 18 June is celebrated as a month-long campaign on human rights. 

Then, it was said that constant state-building reforms were initiated by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev and today are continued by his successor President Ilham Aliyev, including those for the protection and promotion of human rights.  Mr. Abbasov also talked about the history of enacting the first Constitution of independent Azerbaijan, legislative framework and about a number of decrees and orders of public importance in the field of human rights.

Furthermore, the participants were informed about the Presidential Decree of 1998 on the abolishment of the capital punishment, Decree of 1998 on the actions for ensuring human and civil rights and freedoms and Order of 1998 On the approval of the State Program on the protection of human rights. Alike, one of such keystone documents was Constitutional Law on the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan adopted in 2001.    

It was also stated that Azerbaijan became a fully-fledged member of the international community as a result of the reforms taken by the President Ilham Aliyev in all fields of public-political, socio-economic and cultural life, legal-state and state-and-citizen relationship and human rights. One of the factors impacted on the development of the country are the Presidential decrees, orders, state programs, including National Action Plan on the Protection of Human Rights and 2011 National Program for Action to Raise Effectiveness of the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms in the Republic of Azerbaijan. 

All the questions of the participants engaged in the videoconference were answered.
