The European Ombudsman Institute (EOI) was established in 1988 and is an international organization headquartered in Innsbruck, Austria. The Institute’s main objectives are to strengthen cooperation among ombudsman institutions, promote human rights and the principles of good governance, and advance research activities and the exchange of experience.
EOI operates as a platform bringing together ombuds institutions, experts, and academic circles from Europe and other regions.
The Ombudsman Institution of Azerbaijan has been a member of the EOİ since 2003. Throughout these years, it has established close cooperation with the Institute, regularly participated in its events, and engaged in mutual exchanges of experience across various areas of protection of human rights. At the initiative of the Ombudsman, many members of the EOI have also participated in international events held in the Republic of Azerbaijan upon the invitation.
In response to the statement issued on 26 February 2021 by the Secretary General of the EOİ, Y. Ziegel, concerning Azerbaijan, the Ombudsman addressed an open letter to the President, the Board, and the institutional members of the organization.
In 2023, within the framework of an official visit to Ankara, Republic of Türkiye, Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva met with Josef Siegel, EOİ Secretary General.
During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the current state of bilateral relations and future priorities, and discussed a number of issues of mutual interest.
Reports and press releases about the Ombudsman’s activities have been regularly submitted to the EOI, and many of these documents have been published on the organization’s official website.
