President signed the next Order on Pardoning

On April 6, 2020, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed an Order on pardoning several convicts. 176 convicts were released from unserved part of sentence upon investigation of the appeals addressed to the President by the convicts aged over 65, who are in need of special care because of their age or health conditions due to the outbreak of COVID-19 infection, and by their family members; taking into account the health state and behaviour of convicts during their term of imprisonment and being guided by the principles of humanism.

It should be mentioned that on the basis of the abovementioned Presidential Order 10 convicts were pardoned by consideration of the Ombudsman’s motions submitted under the Article 1.7 of the Constitutional Law on th Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In total, 66 pardons and 11 acts of amnesty have been issued in Azerbaijan during the years of independence.
