Regional centers of the Ombudsman held a range of events regarding December 10 - International Human Rights Day

A series of legal awareness raising events with respect to the International Human Rights Day were held at school No.3 in Samukh district by  Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman, in Jalilabad branch of Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University and Jalilabad Medical College by Jalilabad Regional Center of the Ombudsman, in  Armanat village of Oghuz district and Boyuk Dahna village of Sheki district by Sheki Regional Center of the Ombudsman and at school No.3 in Guba city by Guba Regional Center of the Ombudsman with participation of staff members of local executive authorities and municipalities, teachers, students of universities and higher classes, as well as residents of villages and the wide public.

At the events the heads of Regional Centers greeted and congratulated the participants on behalf of the Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva with regard to 10 December- International Human Rights Day. They mentioned that in 1948, December 10 the UDHR was adopted and since 1950 this date is celebrated as the Human Rights Day every year. It was noted that this document, which sets forth norms to be followed by each country in the field of human rights, has been signed by most of the world countries.

It was emphasized that the Republic of Azerbaijan became a member of the UN and signed many conventions after the restoration of independence in the end of the last century, and the issue of ensuring human rights and freedoms were at the heart of the legal reforms initiated by the National leader Heydar Aliyev and continued by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. The reflection of the basic international principles on human rights in the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan was also emphasized. During the events they also provided information about the UN human rights mechanisms, international conventions to which our country is a party, legal reforms carried out in the Republic of Azerbaijan. Moreover, it was noted that unfortunately in our modern period numerous states use human rights and freedoms as a mean to influence other states for ensuring their own interests. As four UN Security Council resolutions demanding withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan is not fulfilled to this day because of the double standards existing in the world, a big part of the Azerbaijani people have been deprived of their basic human rights and freedoms, living IDP life for many years.

Making mention of the comprehensive activity carried out by the Azerbaijani Ombudsman institution in the field of promotion, protection and propagation of human rights in the country, it was also emphasized that the Ombudsman institution had been successful in ensuring and protecting the rights of the child, like in the protection of the rights of citizens from different groups.

The actions taken in the field of combating child abuse and the hotline service 916 operating with regard to children were brought into attention.
