Ombudsman holds a range of events regarding June 1- International Day for Protection of Children

The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Elmira Suleymanova holds series of events regarding June 1-International Day for Protection of Children.

The Ombudsman has met with children in the Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Down syndrome within the Human Rights Month, congratulated them for “Gizil Chinar” International Award handed to Zarifa Mammadova, the deputy director of this Center.

Moreover, a meeting was held with a group of students and youth in the Ombudsman Office at the initiative of Sabunchu District Executive Power. The Deputy Head of the District Executive Power Rana Farajova and staff members took part at the meeting.

The Commissioner expressed her best wishes to the guests on the occasion of the Republic Day and June 1. She gave information about the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first parliamentary republic in the Muslim East, its progressive achievements, institution of democratic mechanisms etc.

The Commissioner highlighted the importance of the International Day for Protection of Children, the attention paid to ensuring children’s rights and adoption of laws, state programs in this regard.

It was noted that the Republic of Azerbaijan joined the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), in the very early years of independence, later ratified optional protocols of this international convention and adopted a particular Law on the Rights of the Child.

The Ombudsman spoke about three important strategic documents on human rights in the country. It was mentioned that public hearings are held and their outcomes are summarized, about 700 proposals have been addressed to relevant state bodies as such.

It was pointed out that Hierarchic Child Rights Education program is successfully implemented in 20 schools, including school No.271 in Sabunchu, more than 12.000 students distinguished in this process have been awarded certificates.

The guests visited and got acquainted with the organizational structure of the Office, receiving the appeals and their investigation. Each of the schoolchildren was given the UNCRC and other publications in Azerbaijani language.
