Ombudsman and Institute of History co-organized conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of 1918 genocide of the Azerbaijanis

The Commissioner for Human Rights and the Institute of History named after A.Bakikhanov of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) held a scientific conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Genocide of the Azerbaijanis.

The Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova, Director of the Institute of History of ANAS, academician, MP Yagub Mahmudov, MPs Elman Nasirov and Sahiba Gafarova, Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court Sona Salmanova, Deputy Prosecutor General Namig Asgarov, Deputy Minister of Justice Maharram Aliyev, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport Farhad Hajiyev, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs Garay Farhadov, representatives of Ministries and State Committees, other state institutions, scientists from the Institute of History, representatives of non-governmental organizations and mass media participated in the conference.

The Ombudsman gave detailed information about one of the bloodiest events in the history of our people one of which is 1918 genocide committed against the Azerbaijanis.

In her speech the Commissioner noted that according to the Decree signed by Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on “The 100th Anniversary of the 1918 Genocide of the Azerbaijanis” in order to convey the truth about the crimes committed by the Armenian-Bolshevik armed troops against the Azerbaijanis 100 years ago, relevant Plan of Actions was approved and important work is carried out in this direction.

Focusing on human rights factor, the Commissioner said that this mass annihilation of people committed in March-April, 2018 is genocide and one of the gravest crimes against humanity.  Thus, each of the acts constituting the composition of the crime against humanity and reflected in international documents was committed by the Armenians against the Azerbaijanis during the March and April events of 1918 and must be assessed as genocide from the legal point of view.

E Suleymanova said that nations live in a friendly environment in Azerbaijan, there is a tolerant atmosphere, our country is known as an example of true multiculturalism in the international arena and it creates more opportunities for successful integration into the world culture, secularism and human rights.

She added that in her Statement on the 100^th anniversary of 1918 Genocide of the Azerbaijanis she called the international community to defend human rights, to support our just position, expressed her hope that this crime against humanity would receive international legal and political assessment as a genocide act, the criminals would be punished, the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan the massive rights of one million refugees and internally displaced persons would be restored, captives and hostages would be liberated.

Yaqub Mahmudov spoke about the history, causes and consequences of these bloody events, historical facts, essential documents, books in this regard.
