The Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva, virtually participated in an international conference on “Human Rights – Important Factor of the Sustainable Development of States” dedicated to the 29th anniversary of the Ombudsman Institution of Uzbekistan, and spoke on the topic “Ensuring gender equality and the rights of PWDs within the framework of achieving the SDGs.”
The Ombudsman provided information about the activities in ensuring gender equality and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, children, women, and other social population groups in the country and stressed the importance of formulating the relevant national legal framework, ratifying a number of international treaties, and building cooperation with the relevant international organizations.
Emphasizing the amendments to the Constitutional Law on the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, the Ombudsman informed the participants about the enforcement of the international conventions relative to the rights of PWDs and children, as well as the new mandate to function as an independent monitoring mechanism for promoting gender equality and preventing discrimination.
