The Working Group on Statelessness where the Ombudsman Office is also represented has started its work

Following the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recommendation and under the decision by Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, a Working Group (WG) on the Statelessness was established. The primary objectives of the WG are to organize the activities in the area of elimination of statelessness at the national level in compliance with international State obligations, to amicably coordinate the interaction between the institutions, to ensure the implementation of the relevant decisions, and operative solution of practical work.    

The first meeting of the WG, which consists of the members of the State Migration Service, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Security Service, Foreign Intelligence Service, as well as the Ombudsman Office and UNCHR Baku Office took place on September 22, 2020. The Ombudsman Institution was represented by the staff members Mr. Vugar Heydarov and Ms. Turan Jahangirova.   

During the meeting, the WG has discussed the issues on the activities for the elimination of the statelessness, identification of stateless persons, developing a wide information database on concerned issues, and increasing the awareness of the people in this field and other related issues.    

It was noted that with joint efforts of the Ombudsman Institution, State Migration Service and UNHCR country representative, an educational material is being developed on ensuring the right to a nationality as one of the fundamental human rights.
