Sheki Regional Center of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan held a videoconference on the topic “Ensuring gender equality is one of the main tasks of the state” jointly with Balaken district Heydar Aliyev Center. The event was attended by staff of the Youth and Sports Department of Balaken district, Heydar Aliyev Center of Zagatala district, as well as young people.
During the event, Parviz Mammadov, head of Sheki Regional Center, informed the participants about global trends in the field of promotion of gender equality, including measures taken by the international organizations towards combating gender inequality and development of the relevant international legal framework.
The discussions have brought to the agenda the importance of expanding the gender-related rights and opportunities relying on the 5th Goal of the UN SDGs. It was stated that this goal also provides the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and girls, human trafficking, sexual and other forms of exploitation, early and forced marriage as well as access to reproductive health.
Furthermore, the discussions also covered the issues related to the steps carried out domestically in the field of promotion of gender equality during the past decade, on provisions of the Law on Guarantees of Gender (Men and Women) Equality, which reaffirms eliminating all forms of gender-based discrimination and ensuring gender equality in the political, economic, social and cultural spheres. Alike, the participants were informed on the Development Concept “Azerbaijan 2020: Outlook into Future” and the State Program “Azerbaijani Youth in 2017-2021” also provide the issue of ensuring the gender equality.
Eventually, the participants have been provided with broad information about the activity of the Ombudsman in the field of ensuring gender equality. Later, the participants discussed the issues related to the topic.
