Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman jointly with Samukh district Heydar Aliyev Center held an online regional legal awareness event on gender equality on August 18, 2020. The event has brought together representatives of Heydar Aliyev Center branches in Guba, Khachmaz, Balaken, Zagatala, Gabala, Oguz, Neftchala, Shabran, Shirvan, Khyzy, Astara, Lenkaran, Yardimli, Lerik, Kurdamir, Zerdab, Sabirabad, Gazakh, Shemkir, Masalli, Salyan and Garadag districts.
During her opening speech, the Director of Heydar Aliyev Center in Samukh district, Nurana Hasanova said that ensuring women rights and gender equality is one of the priorities of the country’s national policy founded by the National Leader Heydal Aliyev and successfully continued by the country President Ilham Aliyev and the First Vice-President of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva.
Delivering the speech at the event, the head of Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman, Sabuhi Abbasov has underlined the facts that women rights protection and promotion, gender equality are also issues of priority in the activity of the Commissioner, that the Ombudsman Office carries out broad awareness activity about combating gender-based violence (GBV) and domestic violence and annually launches related events for the various groups of population in close cooperation with central and local state bodies. In the frame of the annually observed “16-Day of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” from November 25 to December 10, various awareness works on GBV is carried out. Sabuhi Abbasov added that as a result of the joint work of the Ombudsman Office with the Youth and Sport Departments, in the frame of the State Program on Azerbaijani Youth in 2017-2021, the awareness of the young people in legal matters and gender equality has increased. He also noted the important role of the Ombudsman in the enforcement of measures, including promotion of gender equality, provided in the Action Plan on the Prevention of Gender-biased Sex Selection for the period of 2020-2025, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers Order dated February 24, 2020, and organization of series of training accordingly.
While talking about the complex measures at the national level, it was noted that the reforms are continued for ensuring gender equality, equal opportunities for men and women, development of relevant legal framework, protection of the rights of women.
The participants also underlined the significance of the gender equality in their presentations. The event was continued with interactive discussions.
