Regional Centers of the Ombudsman held events on International Day for Protection of Children

Ombudsman’s four Regional Centers held events on the occasion of June 1, International Day for Protection of Children within the framework of the annual Human Rights Month-long Campaign from May 18 to June 18 which was introduced at the initiative of the Ombudsman.

Ombudsman’s Ganja Regional Center, Goygol District Executive Authority and Goygol District Child Fine Arts Center jointly organized an online awareness-raising event on the topic “Let’s know and protect our rights” with participation of schoolchildren from Goygol district.

The Head of Ombudsman’s Jalilabad Regional Center, Ziya Ismayilov joined the event with the motto “Children are our joy, happiness and future of society” that was held in Lankaran City Mixed-type Children’s Home named after O.Mirzayev and was devoted to International Day for Protection of Children.

Ombudsman’s Guba Regional Center also conducted an awareness-raising event via videoconferencing with participation of staff members of Youth and Sport departments from Siyazan, Khizi, Shabran and Khachmaz districts, also with active young persons from these districts.

Ombudsman’s Sheki Regional Center held an awareness-raising event with participation of staff members of Oghuz District Executive Authority, Heydar Aliyev Center, Youth and Sport department, educational department, culture division, centralized library systems, as well as NGOs, teachers, children and young persons.

Heads of Regional Centers congratulated the participants on the 1st June on behalf of the Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva. It was pointed that child rights protection is one of the key directions of the Ombudsman’s activities. During the events the participants were informed about the Statement issued by the Ombudsman on June 1, 2020, with regard to International Day for Protection of Children, that highlighted the necessity of organizing online awareness-raising events, painting and composition competitions by central and local executive bodies about protecting children’s rights, state care for them, fight against child labor and early marriage cases, prevention of spreading harmful habits among children, ensuring the rights of children with limited health capacities and their social inclusion, protection of children from discrimination, right to equality and other topics.

Participants were also comprehensively informed about the historical background of this date; provisions of national legislation and international tools on guarantees of the rights of the child, as well as about the activities carried out by the Ombudsman institution for ensuring children’s rights. It was emphasized that protecting children’s rights is an area of special attention for the Commissioner and there is a 24/7 hotline service (916) operating for timely revealing and investigation of cases on child abuse and other violations.
