Ganja Regional Center of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan launched an event in the Pre-trial Detention Facility No. 2 of the Penitentiary Service on the occasion of December 31 - Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis and New Year.
During his speech the Head of the Ganja Regional Center, Sabuhi Abbasov delivered greetings of the Commissioner Sabina Aliyeva to the female accused persons and congratulated them on both forthcoming holidays.
It was noted that the Commissioner pays special attention to the issues of protection and promotion of the rights of the arrested and the convicted, including women’s rights. As the Commissioner, Sabina Aliyeva organized her first meeting to the female penitentiary facility No. 4.
It was also stated that according to the humanism policy, pardons were issued by the country President Ilham Aliyev on a regular basis and acts of Amnesty were adopted.
S. Abbasov also said the significant legal reforms were carried out at the national level by stressing the importance of the Executive Order “On improving work in the penitentiary system, humanization of the punishment policy and expansion of alternative punishments and procedural enforcement measures not associated with isolation from society” of February 10, 2017, as well as of the Presidential Decree on “Deepening the Reforms in the Judicial-Legal System” dated April 3, 2019.
He gave broad information about the Commissioner’s mandate, directions of activity as the National Preventive Mechanism, application opportunities, hotlines, and also answered the questions.
The detainees expressed their thankfulness to the Commissioner for paying special attention to the protection of their rights and for her interest in the situation.
At the meeting, the staff of the Regional Center presented holiday gifts to the participants.
