The Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Azerbaijan met with the IOM Chief of Mission in Azerbaijan

The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva has recently met with Vladimir Gjorgjiev, International Organization for Migration (IOM) Chief of Mission in our country.

 Greeting the guest, the Ombudsman gave detailed information about the activities of the Institute in the field of promoting, ensuring and protecting migrants' rights. The Ombudsman noted that the appeals of migrants are being regularly investigated, and intensive contacts and coordinated cooperation with relevant government agencies are continuing. Sabina Aliyeva pointed that the solution of problems faced by our compatriots living abroad is in the main focus, also noting ongoing meetings and consultations in this area, promotion of legal migration and other measures.

Vladimir Gjorjiev congratulated Sabina Aliyeva on her election as the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan and stressed the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation. He spoke about the projects implemented by the represented organization in the field of ensuring the rights of IDPs and migrants in Azerbaijan.

During the meeting the importance of information exchange, as well as considering the impact of illegal migration on the security of each country, the importance of providing border and immigration services in accordance with national legislation and international standards, and the issues such as comprehensive investigation of asylum applications were discussed.

At the same time, the sides exchanged views and made relevant proposals on the issues related to organizing social measures for individuals placed in detention centers of illegal migrants to spend their leisure time efficiently, strengthening cooperation in implementation of Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, Global Compact on Refugees and other international documents adopted in the field of migration, along with the Sustainable Development Goals, also ensuring and promoting the rights of refugees, IDPs, foreigners, stateless persons and asylum seekers in our country in accordance with national and international law within the framework of the jointly implemented projects.

V. Gjorgjiev expressed the interest in mutual cooperation on the issues raised by the Ombudsman and that the proposals put forward during the meeting could be considered in future cooperation.
