The presentation of film on “Death penalty-a life sentence”, made by the “Objective” Public Union for Support to Promotion of National Values with the financial support of the Council on State Support to NGOs under the Auspices of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was held on December 10.
The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva congratulated the participants on the occasion of December 10- International Human Rights Day. Speaking about the significance of the event, the Ombudsman mentioned that the great leader Heydar Aliyev founded a comprehensive policy in all the spheres of life, as well as in ensuring human rights and freedoms, improvement of legal system, including the area of penal-executive policy. She spoke about the importance of the moratorium declared on the death penalty in relation to 128 persons and the subsequent abolishment of this type of punishment. It was noted that those decisions indicated the value for the human rights.
The Ombudsman especially pointed out the actions carried out by the country President Ilham Aliyev for modernization of state administration and adapting the measures taken in the field of judicial-legal reforms and the activity related to execution of penalties to the requirements of modern period, organization of effective management and numerous initiatives of pardoning.
The Ombudsman mentioned about the study of cause and condition related to the offenses, expanding the work on implementation of preemptive and preventive measures and making it priority in the activity of each authority.
In conclusion, the Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva thanked everyone, who had supported preparation of that socially important film, and invited the state bodies, civil society institutions to cooperation. She stressed that the jointly conducted activities would significantly contribute to ensuring human rights and the reforms carried out in the country.
