A legal awareness raising event on the topic “Combating gender-based violence” was jointly held by Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman, Goygol District Executive Authority and Goygol District Support Center for Children and Families under the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs.
The head of the Goygol District Executive Authority, Babak Rasulov opened the event with his speech noting the importance of raising legal awareness of population on combating gender-based violence committed on the basis of and the particular importance of such kind of events. He thanked the Ombudsman institution on behalf of the population of the district for organizing the event.
The head of the Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman, Sabuhi Abbasov conveyed the Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva’s greetings to the participants. He noted that the event was organized within the framework of the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which is held all over the world at the initiative of the UN, and on the basis of the National Program for Action. Every year individuals and organizations throughout the world are called to prevent and eliminate the violence against women within this global event, known as 16 Days of Activism campaign that is held between November 25-International Day for Combating violence against Women and December 10- International Human Rights Day.
It was also noted that legislative reforms in the field of human rights and freedoms were developed in the country. The Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Prevention of Violence against Women that was adopted on June 22, 2010, defines and regulates measures for prevention of violence by abusing close kinship, current or past cohabitation (marriage), its negative legal, medical and social consequences, social protection of persons suffering domestic violence, providing legal assistance to them, as well as elimination of circumstances allowing domestic violence.
The speaker also provided broad information on the provisions of the abovementioned Law, the measures carried out by the Ombudsman institution, rules of investigating applications and complaints, competencies of the Commissioner and regional centers, also the rules of applying to regional centers.
Staff members of Goygol District Support Center for Children and Families under the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs and the Ganja Regional Department of the State Committee on Religious Associations delivered speeches regarding the topic.
Complaints addressed to the Commissioner by attendees were received by the staff members of Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman.
