Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman and Ganja branch of Azerbaijan Society of Disabled Women (DWSA) jointly organized an event on the topic “Role of the Ombudsman institution in protection of the rights of persons with disabilities” dedicated to 3 December - International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The head of the Ganja Regional Center Sabuhi Abbasov mentioned that December 3 was declared as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) under the Resolution of the UN General Assembly dated October 14, 1992, being widely celebrated by international community, including our country.
He noted that important legislative acts have been adopted as a logical sequence of the legal reforms carried out by the country leadership in the area of ensuring human rights and freedoms, enshrined in the Constitution of the country and international treaties, to which Azerbaijan is a party. In this order the protection of social rights of PwDs is of great importance. As a result of that the state keeps under focus the issues of ensuring human rights and freedoms in a complex way and improving their social welfare.
It was noted that the Azerbaijani Ombudsman institution always keeps the matters related to ensuring the rights of PwDs and children with limited health capacities in focus; implements various measures aimed at solving the problems of those people, thus their integration to society; puts forward numerous proposals before the relevant authorities and takes actions for their implementation.
It was told that the analysis of the applications addressed to the Commissioner and the monitorings showed that a number of measures have been taken for solution of their problems.
It was also underlined that firstly, the impediments interfering integration of PwDs in society should be removed; conditions should be established for them to benefit from education, employment, healthcare, information-communication and other services with the equal opportunities; medical, vocational-labour and social rehabilitation measures should be broadened.
The head of Ganja branch of the DWSA, Elmira Ismayilova expressed her gratitude to the Ombudsman for attaching importance to the rights of PwDs and wished success for the future activities.
Staff members of Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman received applications addressed to the Commissioner by some of the persons with disabilities attending the event.
