Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan, participated in the opening ceremony of the 9th Baku International Book Fair organized by the Ministry of Culture at the Baku Expo Center.
During her speech, the Ombudsman congratulated the participants of the exhibition on this grand book festival and expressed her sincere wishes to them.
Emphasizing the importance of books in nourishing people's knowledge and values, the Ombudsman highlighted the unique role of books, which are one of the global values, in the future lives and development of every person.
S. Aliyeva noted that, since the establishment of the Ombudsman Institution, the Human Rights Library, the first specialized library on human rights aimed at developing legal science and raising public legal awareness, was created. She also added that the mentioned library's collection is primarily composed of more than 11,000 publications from local and international sources.
The Ombudsman said that the publications of the Ombudsman Institution have been traditionally exhibited extensively at the Ninth Baku International Book Fair.
After the opening ceremony, the Ombudsman acquainted herself with the books and printed materials exhibited at the fair. Furthermore, she met with numerous visitors in front of the stand showcasing publications of the Ombudsman's Institution, answering their questions.
It should be noted that this year's exhibition features the Ombudsman Institution’s 240 publications in Azerbaijani, Russian, and English. The exhibited publications include informative booklets and brochures prepared by the Institution on topics such as combating domestic violence, protecting the rights of migrants, the right to access information, and children with autism, as well as fact-finding reports on human rights violations committed by Armenia during the 30-year occupation of Azerbaijani territories, hate speech and hate crimes, and the findings of the casualties and damages from rocket attacks on civilian objects during the Second Karabakh War and into scattered cemeteries and discovered mass graves belonging to Azerbaijanis.
The publications produced by the Institution for the purpose of legal awareness have already been sent to numerous ombudsmen and national human rights institutions of other countries, national libraries, international human rights organizations, university libraries, as well as the libraries of several state agencies and institutions operating in our country, including the offices of international organizations active in Azerbaijan.
