On June 3-7, 2019, the next National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) Academy was held in Italy, Venice. The Academy was co-organized by ENNHRI and ODIHR in cooperation with Global Campus for Human Rights. Representatives from nearly 30 NHRIs attended the Academy.
The Ombudsman Office implementing NHRI functions in Azerbaijan was represented by chief advisor Aydan Talibova in this Academy.
Main aim of the Academy was to facilitate exchange of practices among NHRIs, to increase capacities of participants to contribute to legislative procedures on human rights, to enhance joint actions and integration among NHRIs, ODIHR, ENNHRI and other interested parties.
Sessions of the 6th edition of the NHRI Academy were devoted to protection, promotion and monitoring of economic and social rights, propagating them via communication means, focusing on Paris Principles, collaboration with relevant subjects and other topics.
First Deputy Director of the ODIHR Katarzyna Gardapkhadze opened the event, Head of Human Rights Department Omer Fisher, Deputy Head Jennifer Croft and adviser Mark Van Gool made presentations about this institution. Speeches and presentations were also made by Secretary General in the Global Campus Manfred Nowak, ENNHRI Chair Emily Logan, Secretary-General Debbie Kohner, Executive Director of Center for Economic and Social Rights Mihir Mankad, experts invited from the OSCE and different NHRIs.
The representative of the Ombudsman spoke about the Commissioner’s activity based on the Paris Principles regarding protection and promotion of the rights of different groups of population, awareness-raising work in this regard.
During the thematic sessions, the representative informed about the activities implemented in cooperation with the UN, international or regional organizations, evaluated as best experience. She also pointed out the hierarchic child rights education, rights of persons with disabilities, also the actions for ensuring women’s rights, preventing evasion of girls from education, fighting early marriage, consideration and implementation of majority of the Commissioner’s proposals.
On the last day, the participants were awarded with certificates of the Academy issued by the ENNHRI and ODIHR.
