National Preventive Group continues visits

Upon the instruction of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmira Suleymanova, members of the Ombudsman’s National Preventive Group against Torture conducted a visit to the Temporary Detention Place and Investigation Isolator of the State Security Service without a prior notice.

The visit was aimed at the investigation of detention conditions and treatment issues, the status of ensuring the rights of detainees in the facility.

During the visit, detention conditions, nutrition, medical assistance, walking and status of ensuring other rights, treatment issues were investigated; a number of accused persons were received in private for this purpose.

Received persons were explained about their rights, the requirements of relevant legislation and competences of the Ombudsman with regard to their appeals. Legal advice was provided to persons who raised issues related to the investigation on their cases.

At the end of the visit,  discussions were conducted with the administration of the Temporary Detention Place and Investigation Isolator, certain recommendations were given in line with national and international legislation.
