On September 10-12, head of the Office Aydin Safikhanli attended the OSCE Annual Human Dimension Meeting held in Warsaw. According to agenda, democratic institutions, information and media freedom, elections, civil society’s role in the protection of human rights, prevention of torture, humanitarian issues, human trafficking and equal opportunities for women and men, child rights protection sessions were held.
A. Safikhanli made presentations in some of those sessions and spoke about democratic institutions and elections, electoral reforms taken in the country, hisotrical background of the right to suffrage in Azerbaijan since Democratic Reppublic established in 1918, state policy based on humanism, Ombudsman’s accomplishments in human rights promotion at the national level, good practices, application of innovative computer, information and communication technologies at work of the Ombudsman, E-government, and Open government, Ombudsman’s activities in the frame of implementation of the Law on Information.
He also underlined the reforms taken in the criminal policy such as the last Presidential Order on humanization of criminal policy, enhancing the penitentiary system and expanding the alternative punishment methods and procedural compulsory measures, reforms taken in modernization of tecnical base of the judiciary, developing relevant legislative framework, granting detained persons with additional privileges that resulted in humanization of criminal policy, criminal legislation, framing new approach to ensuring prisoners’ rights, improving the work of the penitentiary system and etc. It was spoken about the Ombudsman’s activities as an NPM as well.
