The Commissioner for human rights of Azerbaijan received the Senior Officer of the UN Migration Agency Regional Office in Vienna and Responsible for “Global Compact”, Mr. Amr Taha and IOM country Office Head, Mr. Serhan Aktoprak at their request.
The purpose of the visit was to discuss how to continue bilateral fruitful cooperation between two institutions in the field of migration and ensuring rights of migrants.
At the meeting, issues of protection of rights of vulnerable groups of population, including refugees and IDPs, migrants, seniors, child and women, and persons with disabilities have been discussed.
“Within recent years number of migrants has considerably increased in the world” said the Commissioner, highliting the significance of bringing the existed legislation and adopting new rules into compliance with international standards, establishing new executive structures and strict control over their activities. She also added that close cooperation with international NHRIs in the field of migration have been achieved.
It was also noted that the Commissioner and her staff conduct visits to administrative detention centers for migrants in Baku and Yevlakh cities under the State Migration Service on regular basis to investigate treatment and custody that were developed if deemed necessary based on the Commissioner’s recommendations; legal awareness events have been launched in relevant cross-border facilities in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and legal publications were prepared in foreign languages.
Mr. Amr Ibrahim Taha gave broad information on Global Compact, offering joint cooperation with Ombudsman in law centers to be opened in eight rayons of the country to what the Commissioner agreed upon.
