4-8 June, 2018 the next Academy of National Human Rights Institutions was held in Helsinki, Finland. The European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), with support of Finnish Human Rights Center, have attended the NHRIs from more than 20 countries. Ombudsman Officewas represented by Ms. Shebnem Gambarova at this training.
The Academy was aimed at more preceise understanding of ODIHR and ENNHRI resources and work practice, organization of the daily work of participating countries NHRIs in line with Paris principles, increasing professional capacities of participants to make input to the human rights legislation. Meanwhile, easing exchange of practice and participating in the Network and strenghening integration among ODIHR, ENNHRI and other interested international, regional, and national parties have also a subject of discussion.
Sessions of this 5th Academy focused on issues about gender issues in the work of NHRIs, their role in legislative processes, monitoring and evaluation of current legislation, and creating favourable conditions for human rights defenders.
Ombudsman representative gave information about the activity of Ombudsman in general. Emphasizing that Ombudsmen plays important role as a bridge between civil society and the government, she informed the participants about upcoming XV International Baku Conference titled “The role of National Human Rights Institutions in ensuring and promotion of equal rights”.
The event finalized with signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between ODIHR and ENNHRIs. The participants were presented certificates.
The participating organizations of the training were OSCE ODIHR, Finnish Human Rights Center, Croatian Ombudsman, “Seidenstiker coaching and consulting” and members of other NHRIs.
