Events dedicated to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Conference entitled “Commitments of Azerbaijan on Implementation of Convention on the Rights of persons with Disabilities: achievements, challenges and perspectives” were held on the occasion of December 3 - International Day of Persons with Disabilities by the Ministry of Labour and Social protection of Population.

Mugalib Mahmudov, representative of the Ombudsman Office attended the event. He made a presentation on “Equality and unacceptability of discrimination”. In his speech he gave information about the actions taken by state for protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, the multi-dimensional activity of the Commissioner in this regard. It was noted that the Commissioner pays close attention to the issues regarding social-legal situation of persons with disabilities, ensuring and protection of their rights, measures taken for solution of existing problems.

Another event in this regard was held at Leadership School of Azerbaijan Child and Youth Peace Network. Faig Aghayev and Mugalib Mahmudov participated in the event.

They noted 3 December was decelerated as the Day of Persons with Disabilities by UN General Assembly in 1992 and has been observed in our country since 1995 according to the relevant decision of Cabinet of Ministers. Children were also informed about the aim of these days and actions taken in this regard.

At the event held in Rehabilitation Center for Children with limited Health capacities. Representatives of the Ombudsman Office also attended the event. They spoke about the activity of Ombudsman for protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, as well as about the notion of disability, disability terminology, medical and social approaches to disability, advantages of social approach, transition from medical approach to social one in Azerbaijan etc.
