Recently, within Asylum Systems Quality Initiative in Eastern Europe and South Caucasus launched in 2013, regional training was co-organized by UNHCHR, Ombudsman Office and State Migration Service in Ganja. The event was attended by the representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ganja City Executive Power, local law-enforcement bodies, customer and border services bodies.
Head of Department for Protection of the Rights of Refugees, IDPs and Migrants, in her speech focused on the reforms carried out in the country for protection of human rights, the role of Ombudsman Office in protection of the rights of refugees, IDPs and migrants, and multi-dimensional activity of the Commissioner in this regard. She emphasized the necessity of defining the place of migrants crossing the border illegally, strengthening the control over checkpoints and the process of issuing visas, conducting legal awareness work and the importance of cooperation among state bodies, NGOs and communities working on improvement of procedural rules and asylum systems for defining the refugee status.
