In the framework of cooperation with higher education institutions, the undergraduate and master students of three universities for the 2023/2024 academic years, started their internship and scientific-research in the Ombudsman Office of Azerbaijan. In the first stage, the master students in Human Rights and Health Law specializations of the Law faculty of the Baku State University, as well as undergraduate students of the International Relations and Regional Studies, and Translation faculties of the Azerbaijan University of Languages, and Political Studies faculty of the Western Kaspi University.
On the first day of the internship, Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva had a meeting with the intern students, emphasizing that having an internship in the Office is a traditional practice. The students were recommended to take advantage of this internship, which aimed at improving students’ knowledge and skills, and shaping them as competitive and globally responsive professionals in line with the demands of the labor market.
At the meeting, the importance of familiarizing interns with the Constitutional Law on the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, as well as other legislative acts and international treaties ratified by the state, was emphasized.
Afterward, the interns were informed about human rights reforms implemented in the country, the legal basis of the establishment and activities of Ombudsman Office as a non-judicial protection mechanism, the structure of the Ombudsman Office, and other issues by the authorized staff members of the Office.
The expansion of the Commissioner’s mandate, the fulfillment of the functions of independent mechanisms for the promotion and monitoring of the implementation of the "Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities" and the "Convention on the Rights of the Child," ensuring equality and preventing discrimination, as well as taking other actions to improve the Office's activities, were also highlighted.
At the end, general information about the organization of the internship process, its rules and assessment criteria was provided, and the interns’ questions regarding were answered.
