The Council of Europe experts highly appreciated the Commissioner’s NPM activity

The Azerbaijani Commissioner for human rights received the CoE experts Mr. John McGuckin and Mrs. Catherine who were on an official visit.

At the meeting human rights reforms, developments in the national legislation, achievements in the field of human rights, status of ratification of international treaties by Azerbaijan, which exceeded 250, including the CAT and its OP, thereto. Diplomats have been briefed about national preventive activity of the Ombudsman, the legal basis of this activity, its visits to various agencies, including penitentiary and social-care institutions.

The guests were also informed about international cooperation of the Ombudsman Office, including the mutual relations with the CoE towards human rights protection and promotion. Both sides have discussed the issues dealing with complaint and application procedures to the Ombudsman, NPM activity, bilateral cooperation non-governmental organizations, protection of prisoners’ and detainees’ rights and awareness raising activities, NPM ad-hoc and scheduled visits as well as recommendations and suggestions made to various competent bodies. 

It was also provided broad information about EU Projects, Twinning, TAIEX and Eastern Partnership, and Ombudsman’s mutual cooperation with UN SPT, and APT.   

Experts highly appreciated the overall activity of the Commissioner in the field of human rights and they have been presented legal publications prepared by the Ombudsman Office.
