International Organization for Migration (IOM) experts, Mr. Aydogan Asar and Mr. Murat Ogdu who were on an official visit in Azerbaijan were received at the Ombudsman Office.
The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the educational and training tools for the staff of migrant detention centersor shelters and to develop new strategies within the frame of the ongoing IOM Project “Consolidation of Migration and Border Management Capacities in Azerbaijan” (2014-2017).
At the meeting, the head of the Ombudsman Office, Mr. A. Safikhanli briefed about the reforms taken at the national level, which facilitated to better regulation of the migrant flow to the country, and the legislative developments and institutional changes for protection of the rights of migrants. He also gave information about the atrocities of the Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan, which resulted at the occupation of our lands, severe violation of human rights of over one million Azerbaijani civilians who became refugees and IDPs that this has still continued.
At the meeting it was also underlined that the relevant experience of Azerbaijan can be a good example for other countries.
The parties discussed the overall activity of the Commissioner, including protection and promotion of the rights of migrants, refugees and IDPs regular visits to centers for irregular migrants under the State Migration Service, monitoring of their living condition, quality of nutrition and basic needs, Ombudsman’s recommendations to the competent state authorities for improving thesituation of those group of population, according to which positive results have been achieved, as well as about the capacity building seminars organized by the Ombudsman Office for the staff of migration agencies.
During the meeting the Head of the Ombudsman Office sounded several recommendations with regard to preparation of the educational tool, and proposed to include a separate column about the Commissioner’s activity in the relevant field in the Tool and expressed their readiness to assist in this process.
