The International Organization for Migration (IOM) newly appointed Head of the Department on Support to Migrants, Mrs. Shareen Tuladhar and Head of the IOM Baku Office, Mr. Serhan Aktoprak were received at the Commissioner’s Office. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the future perspectives of the bilateral cooperation between the Commissioner and the IOM within the ongoing joint projects.
The head of the Ombudsman Office briefed the overall activity of the Ombudsman underlining that one of the priority issues in the Commissioner’s activity was a protection of migrants’ rights and also, stated that therefore, the Ombudsman Office controls the implementation of international treaties dealing with migrants’ rights at the national level and pays attention to strengthening the mutual cooperative relations with international organizations responsible for the concerned area.
Meantime, it was also stressed that the Commissioner and her staff regularly conduct visits and monitoring to detention centers for irregular migrants under the State Migration Service, learn their daily needs, monitor their living conditions and quality of nutrition, according to which necessary recommendations are given to the corresponding state bodies. Furthermore, the Ombudsman Office organizes seminars for Academy of Justice, Police Academy and State Migration Service staff about different aspects of human rights.
Also, the head of the Office sounded some suggestions about organization of planned and consistent trainings based on international standards for civil servants.
While informing the organization’s priority, the IOM diplomats expressed their interest in mutual cooperation with the Ombudsman Office. Signing a bilateral cooperation agreement was also discussed during the meeting.
