The Ombudsman’s representatives participated in a media tour organized in Lankaran Penitentiary Complex

In her annual reports on the protection of human rights and national preventive mechanism reports, Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, put forward proposals and recommendations to rebuild penitentiary institutions in order to align them with modern standards, improve detention conditions and medical and sanitary services, reduce overcrowding problem, and protect human rights in these institutions.     

It is noteworthy that, considering these proposals and recommendations, the inauguration of new penitentiary institutions, meeting modern standards in the country continues. Thus, in 2022, a new penitentiary facility for women prisoners and juvenile offenders, in 2023, an Umbaki penitentiary complex, and in 2024, a Lankaran penitentiary complex were put into operation. 

On 18^th March of the present year, a media tour was organized in the newly inaugurated penitentiary complex in Lankaran city. The members of the Ombudsman’s National Preventive Group also participated in this media tour organized by the Ministry of Justice and became familiar with the conditions created.
