The Working Group (WG) on Statelessness Issues established in our country to address the cases of statelessness in our country held its next meeting.
Turan Jahangirova, the head of the Unit in the Human Rights Protection Department in the Ombudsman Office, and Orkhan Tapdigli, the senior advisor of the Department, the representatives of the State Migration Service, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Intelligence Service, State Statistics Committee, UN Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, International Organization for Migration, International Center for Migration Policy Development Representation in Azerbaijan, and the President of the Public Council under the State Migration Service, took part in the meeting.
During the meeting, T. Jahangirova gave information about the Ombudsman's initiatives and activities within its mandate in the field of protection and promotion of the rights of stateless persons in conformity with domestic and international legal norms, as well as issues related to the admission, termination, and restoration of citizenship in Azerbaijan, and the determination of citizenship affiliation.
She spoke about good practices established through cooperation with the State Migration Service, ombudspersons of other countries, and diplomatic missions in monitoring the situation of undocumented persons from the vulnerable categories living on the territory of the country, regulating their status, as well as ensuring the rights of Azerbaijanis living in uncertain conditions abroad.
At the event, other WG members representing their respective institutions provided information about their activities in the relevant field.
The issues related to the development of cooperation in a new format for combating statelessness, identifying individuals in stateless situations, their documentation, and effective protection of their rights were discussed at the meeting.
