Ombudsman received the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Azerbaijan

Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva received the Ambassador of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Azerbaijan, Fergus Auld.

Reminding positive discussions from the previous meetings, the Ombudsman emphasized the importance of such gatherings for effective discussions of the prospects of cooperation. 

Emphasizing the significance of collaboration with international organizations, the Ombudsman spoke about cooperation with ombudsmen and NHRIs of other countries, adding that several memoranda of understanding have been signed with these institutions. She also noted that during the UN Human Rights Council’ Universal Periodic Review process, submissions were made to the mentioned organization, highlighting the active participation of the institution in this process.

S. Aliyeva, outlining the last amendments to the Constitutional Law on the Ombudsman, said that the mandate of the Ombudsman was expanded with regard to the protection of PWDs and children’s rights, ensuring equality and preventing discrimination. 

Ombudsman also informed the British diplomat about the mine terror that Armenia carried out on the territories of Azerbaijan during the occupation period, which created serious obstacles for the safe return of the former IDPs to their native lands, and for the large-scale construction and re-building works. She emphasized the high appreciation of the support of Great Britain for our country in de-mining processes. 

Detailing other numerous international events that hosted by our country within last years, discussed the prospects of cooperation within the COP-29- UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, which will be hosted by our country this year.   

At the meeting, the sides also discussed perspectives on future collaboration in the field of human rights protection.
