Delegation of the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye is on visit to Azerbaijan

Efforts are being continued to expand collaboration and organize effective exchanges for the protection of human rights and freedoms based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye (HREIT) and the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan. 

In order to share good practices regarding the national preventive mechanism (NPM) activities and further strenghten  the bilateral cooperation, the Delegation of HREIT, led by the Chairman, Muharrem Kiliç, paid a visit to Azerbaijan at an the invitation of the Ombudsman, Sabina Aliyeva,  

During the visit, as a part of the NPM mandate, the delegation members, together with the members of the National Preventive Group, conducted a monitoring visit to the Umbaki Penitentiary Complex of the Penitentiary Service under the Ministry of Justice. HREIT delegation monitored all premises of the newly inaugurated penitentiary facility and became familiar with the overall situation of detention and protection of the rights of those sentenced to life imprisonment.    

In the course of the monitoring, the Delegation Members were also broadly informed on the NPM activities of the Ombudsman. Ideas and practices were exchanged, and questions they raised were answered.  

It should be noted that in recent days, HREIT Delegation Members has been scheduled to visit other institutions that people cannot leave at their own will, as well as meet with some officials.
