The Human Rights Commissioner of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva, participated in the XV International Economic Forum “Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum 2024,” held in the Republic of Tatarstan of the Russian Federation.
The Ombudsman, in her speech “Increasing Women Empowerment in the Republic of Azerbaijan” in the Forum, spoke about the role of women in Azerbaijan society, stressing the importance of their participation in the public and political life of the country.
Pointing out that ombudspersons and NHRIs play a significant role in the protection of women’s rights and gender equality, Sabina Aliyeva briefed her activities in the relevant field, adding that the Ombudsman Office held legal awareness events with the aim of developing legal culture among women. Furthermore, the Ombudsman Institution has prepared a series of lectures entitled “Introduction to Gender,” along with print materials and articles in the related field.
It was brought to the attention of the participants that the Ombudsman initiated recommendations for the amendment of the existing legal-framework and the adoption of the relevant new bills.
The Ombudsman said that issues related to the protection of women’s rights and freedoms and ensuring gender equality are receiving special attention in Azerbaijan, stating that significant legislative reforms are being carried out in terms of upholding women’s rights.
Considerable developments in gender-responsive policy have been accomplished by virtue of measures taken to encourage women to participate in all areas of the country, the Ombudsman said.
The participants of the forum were also informed by the Ombudsman about good experiences in the fields of protecting women’s right to education and developing women’s entrepreneurship.
Within the framework of the visit, the Ombudsman, S. Aliyeva, met with Alsu Nabiyeva, Head of the Association of Women Deputies “Marhamat / Mercy” and a group of women deputies of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan.
At the meeting, the Ombudsman gave information about her activities for the protection and promotion of human rights and freedoms, underscoring that international cooperation, including close relationships with foreign ombudspersons and NHRIs, takes an important place in these activities.
S. Aliyeva, further speaking about the cooperative relations with the Ombudsman of Tatarstan, highly appreciated the existing relationships between the institutions. future cooperation prospects in ensuring human rights and freedoms, as well as in several other areas, were also discussed at the meeting.
Later, the Ombudsman held a meeting at the regional public organization “National-Cultural Autonomy of Azerbaijan of the Republic of Tatarstan.” During the meeting, the Azerbaijani Ombudsman was informed about the organization's areas of activity, highlighting that measures are taken to preserve the traditions and languages of various peoples, and it was noted that “friendship lessons” are taught to schoolchildren.
The issue of mutual interest was also discussed.
