The United Nations Office in Azerbaijan organized a training seminar titled “Leave No One Behind: Creating an Environment for the Transition to Disability Inclusion” as a part of the introductory training of the Joint Program of the UN Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD).
Representatives from various UN specialized agencies, diplomatic missions in Azerbaijan, relevant state institutions, and non-governmental organizations representing persons with disabilities took part in the training. The Ombudsman Office was represented by Shahla Aslanova, Chief Adviser of the Unit for the Protection of the Rights of PWDs.
The six-day training covered analyzing the provisions of the relevant Convention, understanding the term disability, preconditions necessary for applying approaches to PWDs, inter-sectoral coordination, accountability, disability and gender sensitivity, as well as the potential impacts of climate change. Furthermore, the interrelation between the rights established in the Convention and the UN SDGs, and the promotion of inclusivity and sustainability were focused on.
During the training, relevant topics were extensively discussed in groups and recommendations were made.
During the discussions, Sh. Aslanova pointed out that according to the latest amendment to the Constitutional Law on the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman), the Ombudsman was empowered to promote and monitor the CRPD as an independent monitoring mechanism.
At the end, the trainees were awarded certificates.
