The European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) Working Group on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) held its next online meeting.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the work done in the past period regarding the promotion, protection, and monitoring of the UN CRPD. The event was joined by staff from WG members of the NHRIs, as well as representatives from international organizations.
Following the speech by ENNHRI's Secretary General, Debbie Kohner, NHRIs shared information on the measures implemented over the past year and positive experiences regarding PWDs rights.
Shahla Aslanova, the Chief Advisor on the Protection of PWDs Rights in the Ombudsman Office, spoke about the activities of the Azerbaijan Ombudsman.
The participants were informed about the establishment of an independent Monitoring Group within the institution, as mandated by the last amendment to the Constitutional Law on the Ombudsman regarding the monitoring and promoting the implementation of the CRPD. Moreover, it was noted that the national legislative framework was made relevant amendments on these new powers, about which public awareness events were organized for public officials. Also, the updated Ombudsman’s website contained the website accessibility menu.
Furthermore, it was reported that this year, the Azerbaijan Ombudsman has submitted a parallel report to the UN CRPD Committee and been involved in a project conducted by the Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN PRPD) in the country.
In conclusion, it was noted that the International Baku Forum on "Climate Change and Human Rights," which will be held in the country in October at the initiative of the Ombudsman, is also expected to include measures aimed at ensuring accessibility for PWDs.
