The Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva participated in the High-Level Conference on Statelessness

The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva, took part in the high-level Conference on Statelessness, which was held in collaboration with the State Migration Service of Azerbaijan and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representation in Azerbaijan.

During the conference, attended by government officials from Azerbaijan and a number of foreign countries, as well as representatives of civil society organizations, the Ombudsman made an opening speech.

S. Aliyeva gave information about the Ombudsman Institution’s activities in the field of protecting and supporting the rights of refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and stateless persons and the implementation of relevant international documents. She also noted that, based on the applications received by the Ombudsman, comprehensive measures have been taken to ensure the provision of reliable documents to these persons. The Ombudsman emphasized that vulnerable groups of the population are always kept in focus.

Furthermore, the Ombudsman drew the attention of the conference participants to the fact that throughout history, hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis were forcibly displaced from their native lands as a result of Armenia's policy of ethnic cleansing, and due to Armenia's military aggression during the years 1988-1993, over a million of our compatriots have been living as refugees and IDPs for about thirty years.
