The Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva, had a meeting with the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Great Britain to our country, Fergus Auld, and representatives of the embassy.
During the meeting, the Ombudsman informed the guests about her mandate and the main directions of the activities. While speaking about the human rights reforms carried out at the national level, S. Aliyeva emphasized that the establishment of the Ombudsman institution was one of the most important steps taken in this direction. It was also noted that in Azerbaijan, everyone has the right to apply to the Ombudsman without any discrimination, and each application is treated sensitively. It was also said that to ensure flexibility in the processing of incoming applications, a 24/7 Call Center was established in the institution. The Ombudsman also said that, considering the appeals on pardoning made by convicts and their family members, she requested the Pardon Issues Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
During the meeting, S. Aliyeva gave broad information on the cooperation between the Ombudsman Institution and the UN, the Council of Europe, and other well-known international organizations and talked about the jointly implemented projects on effective protection of human rights. The diplomat was informed about the submission of the parallel reports to the UN Treaty Bodies by the Ombudsman and the activities carried out within the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process.
A number of other issues were discussed at the meeting.
In the end, the guests were presented with a postage stamp dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Ombudsman institution and educational publications prepared by the institution.
