Ombudsman received the Members of the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights

The Commissioner for Human Rights, Sabina Aliyeva received the delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly Council of Europe (PACE) Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights, led by the Committee Member, Konstantinos Efstathiou. The member of the Parliament of Azerbaijan and deputy head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, Kamal Jafarov, attended the meeting as well.

During the meeting, S. Aliyeva provided extensive information on the Constitutional Law on the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the history of the establishment of the Institution, and the Ombudsman’s mandate. It was said that one of the obligations undertaken by our State before the Council of Europe was the establishment of an ombudsman institution. The Ombudsman said that the Institution marks its 20th anniversary and added that the Institution improved its work by taking into account international standards in past years.  

Outlining the importance of cooperation with the Council of Europe, S. Aliyeva gave broad information about the activity, implemented as part of the Regional Project "Strengthening access to justice for victims of discrimination, hate crime and hate speech in the countries of the Eastern Partnership" carried out jointly by the Ombudsman Institution.   

It was noted that during the Project, the Institution’s staff increased their knowledge and professional experience on how to combat discrimination and were given information about the work done to expand the Ombudsman’s mandate in this direction.

The guest thanked the Ombudsman for her cordial reception and highly appreciated the work done in further development of cooperation between the institutions and discussed future cooperation prospects.
