The cooperation of ombudsmen and national human rights institutions with the parliament is extremely important in terms of adopting effective national legislative acts in the field of human rights protection and improving the current legislation in this area.
This opinion was expressed by the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva at a round table on "Ombudsman’s activities: modern challenges and partnership based on human rights."
In her speech, Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva gave extensive information about the work done by the institution towards the effective protection of human rights. She also brought to the attention of the participants the activities carried out in the post-war period, in particular, numerous reports, statements and appeals addressed to international organizations confirming the facts of war crimes committed by the armed forces of Armenia during the 44-day Patriotic War, the death and loss of health of innocent people as a result of mine explosions and environmental terrorism, as well as environmental damage.
Speaking at the event, First Deputy Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Chairman of the Committee for Legal Policy and State-Building Ali Huseynli and Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee on Human Rights Zahid Oruj spokeabout the reforms carried out in the country in the field of improving legislation, and cooperation opportunities with the Parliament .
The speeches noted the importance of the draft of the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on amendments to the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan”, as well as ensuring compliance of normative legal acts on the protection of human rights with the main international conventions and other international agreements in this area, discussions were held in the direction of developing cooperation with the parliament, state institutions, civil society institutions, including non-governmental organizations and the media.
At the event, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan made proposals towards improving the legislation, then the presentations of the responsible employees of the Office in the directions of activities in the field of international cooperation, the National Preventive Mechanism, ensuring the right to access to information were heard and the guests' questions were answered.
Azay Guliyev, Elshad Mirbashir oglu, Elman Nasirov, Bahruz Maharramov, Erkin Gadirli, Vugar Iskanderov, members of the Committees for Legal policy and State-Building and Human Rights of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, spoke during the discussions, shared their opinion on the current experience and the draft law and expressed their suggestions.
The event continued with an exchange of views, and at the end, the guests got acquainted with the process of receiving citizens and the conditions created in the office of the Ombudsman.
