An event dedicated to the International Human Rights Day of December 10, with the participation of representatives of government agencies, international organizations, and civil society, was co-organized by the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the UN Office in Azerbaijan, and the Faculty of Law of Baku State University.
Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, spoke at the event.
During the speech, S. Aliyeva said that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is considered to be the fundamental document of human rights, has a universal character and is the basis and model for the legislative framework of the UN member states. She emphasized that this document, which helped fundamentally change our world, declared for the first time the right of every person to equality and dignity, and determined that everyone has inviolable and inalienable rights and freedoms from the time of birth.
The Ombudsperson brought to the attention of the event participants that today the rights of millions of people in the world are still violated. It was noted that the increase in the cases of racism, intolerance, double standards and discrimination shown by some states and the indifferent attitude of international organizations are causing the violation of human rights and freedoms.
Stating that the implementation of a number of resolutions and decisions adopted by the UN Security Council and other influential international organizations remains only on paper, the Commissioner added that the persons representing the political and military leadership of Armenia using the double standards in relation to Azerbaijan for their own dirty and insidious purposes, committed the crimes against peace and humanity, war crimes and terrorism against Azerbaijanis.
At the same time, she added that under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the restoration of the territorial integrity of our country and the rights of the internally displaced persons, which had been violated for nearly 30 years were restored as a result of the 44-day Patriotic War of the brave Azerbaijani Army.
Later, S. Aliyeva said that the Ombudsman institution, which celebrates 20 years of its establishment this year, is one of the efficient mechanisms operating in the field of protection of human rights and freedoms and that as an independent national human rights institute, it successfully continues its activities in the direction of restoring human rights and freedoms violated by state, local self-government bodies also officials and preventing human rights violations in the cases set by the Constitutional Law .
Also, it was noted that within the framework of the international campaign "16 days of activism against gender-based violence" from November 25 - the International Day against Violence against Women to December 10 - the International Day of Human Rights, that awareness raising activities aimed at prevention of gender-based violence, providing social protection and legal assistance to the victims of it, as well as elimination of the causes of violence, are being carried out in our country.
The event continued with the presentation of the website dedicated to the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" prepared by the students of the Faculty of Law and the performance of "Social Theater" dedicated to human rights.
At the end of the event, the winners of the journalistic writing and children's drawing contests announced on the occasion of December 10 - International Human Rights Day, on the topic "Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) of the Republic of Azerbaijan - 20 years!" were awarded.
