The Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ms. Sabina Aliyeva is on an official visit to Strasbourg.
During her official visit, the Ombudsman had a meeting with Ms. Marija Buri?, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
At the meeting, Ms. Aliyeva recalled that the Ombudsman Institution of Azerbaijan marks its 20th anniversary this year and noted that during these years, numerous projects implemented in cooperation with the Council of Europe contributed to the development of the Institution. During her speech, the Secretary-General was informed about the reforms carried out in recent years to improve the work of the Institution and its Regional Centers.
Later, the Ombudsman spoke about the policy of aggression of Armenia against our country pursued for nearly 30 years, including the violated rights of our internally displaced persons. She also touched on the fact that the fate of 3,890 Azerbaijanis who disappeared during the First Karabakh War is still unknown.
In addition, Ms. Buric was also informed about the territories mined by Armenia during the period of occupation, its adverse effects on the safe return of IDPs, and the human casualties caused by mine explosions.
At the meeting, the Azerbaijani Ombudsman also pointed out that recent provocations committed by Armenia have caused numerous casualties, and that such cases are an obstacle to a just and sustaining peace in the region.
In the end, Ms. Aliyeva also expressed her confidence in international organizations, which will show a firm position on this issue.
The parties discussed other issues of common interest.
