The Ombudsman Institution held the commemoration event on the 30th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.
The memory of the victims of the genocide was commemorated with one-minute silence. During the event, Sabina Aliyeva spoke about the horrible crime committed by armed forces, terrorists, and the 366 motorized regiment of the Soviet Army.
She said that this genocidal act resulted in the brutal killing of 613 people, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly, whereas 1275 people were taken hostage and subjected to torture. The fate of 150 hostages, including 68 women and 26 children, is still unknown. 487 people were severely injured during this genocidal act. Moreover, 8 families were totally exterminated, 130 children lost one and the other 25 children lost both parents.
Saying that this crime shall be classified as genocide in accordance with international law, the Ombudsman stressed the importance of establishing of legal assessment of this crime.
Afterward, the Ombudsman's statement addressed to the international community on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide was sounded.
The event featured a presentation of the film "Khojaly Witness", prepared on the initiative of the Ombudsman, which includes the testimonies of witnesses to the genocide.
In conclusion, Ms.Aliyeva wished God mercy on all martyrs of the First and Second Karabakh Wars, noting that their memory will always be cherished.
