The Law Faculty of the Baku State University (BSU) held an international scientific conference on the topic “21st Century New Challenges and Modern Development Trends in Law” jointly organized with the leading universities of Germany, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, and France. At this conference, State officials, well-known scientists, local and international experts, young researchers, as well as legal scholars from Turkey, Germany, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, France, Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, and Uzbekistan came together.
The Ombudsman Ms. Sabina Aliyeva delivered speeches at the opening ceremony, and the thematic session on “Human Rights, Intellectual Property and Information Law”.
In general, the Ombudsman spoke about the main features of the role of national law in ensuring human rights, the importance of the Constitution and the state human rights programs adopted. Ms. Aliyeva stressed the necessity of raising legal awareness of the population and involving scientists in the study of the issues of human rights.
Underlining the natural nature of human rights, which ennunciated in the Supreme Law of the State, she spoke about the undeniable role of the ever-evolving science of law in ensuring these rights equally and without discrimination.
The Ombudsman spoke about the national human rights action plans and programs successfully implemented in the country in a view to ensuring the bringing human rights regulations into compliance with international standards and the effective functioning of relevant protection mechanisms.
Ms. Aliyeva said that one of the main activities of the Ombudsman's Office is legal education. She added that awareness work is being done in secondary schools and higher education establishments. Consequently, education in child rights in secondary schools and human rights in universities are supported accordingly. Ms. Aliyeva cited the close involvement of the Ombudsman Office in the process of specialization of students in human rights at BSU as an example.
Ms. Aliyeva informed the conference participants about the powers given to the Commissioner by the Constitutional Law “On the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan”.
