Regional Centers of the Ombudsman organized legal awareness events dedicated to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Ganja, Guba, Sheki, and Jalilabad Regional Centers of the Ombudsman organized legal awareness events on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities- 3 December.   

During those events, held with the participation of various bodies and PWDs, it was stated that International Day of Persons with Disabilities – 3 December was established by the UN General Assembly  Resolution dated 14 October 1992 and marked at the international level. The participants were also informed about a number of international legal instruments, in which rights of persons with disabilities have been declared, including UN CRPD, as well as the Law of Azerbaijan on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It was also said that now about 10 percent of the world population is disabled and 20 percent of them are living in developing countries.    

It was also noted that the Ombudsman always pays attention to the issues of the protection of the PWDs and takes measures to solve their problems, and for their social integration within her mandate. A number of recommendations were also formulated and submitted to competent bodies.  

It was stressed that foremost physical barriers to societal integration of this category of persons should be eliminated, all necessary conditions in the field of education, employment, health, information and communication, and etc. services should be created on an equal basis, as well as medical, vocational-labor and social rehabilitation measures should be extended.     

In conclusion, the questions of the participants were answered.
