Ombudsman received the OHCHR Representative for South Caucasus

The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ms. Sabina Aliyeva received the Senior Human Rights Adviser of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for South Caucasus Mr. Vladimir Shkolnikov. The Chief of the Staff at the Ombudsman Office, Mr. Aydin Safikhanli, and the National Human Rights Adviser of the Baku Office of the OHCHR, Mr. Kamran Bagirov also participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, the Ombudsman stressed the importance of mutual cooperation with the UN specialized agencies. She also gave detailed information about new developments in the activities of the Ombudsman institution.

The sides have discussed the areas of cooperation related to the organization of training on "UN Human Rights Protection Mechanisms", and "Enlightening local NGOs on Reporting to UN Treaty Bodies", implementation of a free legal aid project in the capital city and regions, and expansion of legal awareness activities among the population.

Furthermore, the Ombudsman spoke about the facts of gross violations of international law as a result of the crimes committed by Armenia against Azerbaijan, and the reports, statements, and appeals submitted by the Institution on this issue. The Ombudsman also noted that international organizations’ fair position and calls play important role in the provision of landmine maps and the prevention of provocations caused by Armenia.

In turn, Mr. Shkolnikov thanked the Ombudsman for the reception and expressed his interest in the successful continuation of mutual relations in the protection of human rights and freedoms.

The dialogue concluded with discussions about the prospects of future cooperation between the two institutions.
